As part of an ongoing project, the BLOC Concrete Solutions team carried out concrete surface preparation using a mechanical scarifier. This process was required to remove existing surface coatings and prepare the substrate for further treatment.

As part of an ongoing project, the BLOC Concrete Solutions team carried out concrete surface preparation using a mechanical scarifier. This process was required to remove existing surface coatings and prepare the substrate for further treatment.

Concrete surfaces are often covered with layers such as epoxy coatings, paint, adhesives, or other finishes that need to be removed before repair or new applications can be installed. If these layers remain in place, they can prevent new materials from bonding properly to the concrete.

To address this, a scarifier was used to mechanically remove the existing coatings and expose the underlying concrete surface.

Scarifiers are heavy-duty preparation tools fitted with rotating cutter assemblies. As the machine moves across the floor, these cutters chip into the concrete surface, stripping away unwanted layers while simultaneously creating a rough, textured profile. This texture is important because it improves the mechanical bond between the concrete and any new materials that will be applied afterward.

Surface preparation is a critical step in many concrete repair and modification projects. Proper preparation helps ensure that coatings, repair mortars, overlays, or other systems adhere correctly and perform as intended over the long term.
